Resources for the Feast of St Joseph the Worker_1st May 2020

In a tradition that goes back twenty years, the Chair of the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council would usually mark the Feast of St Joseph the Worker with a Pastoral Letter. This year we are making some changes.

Last month the Bishops Commission for Social Justice, Mission and Service confirmed the appointment of Dr Cristina Gomez as the Chair, and Dr Mark Copland as Deputy Chair, of the ACSJC. It is wonderful to have committed and capable lay people in these roles – but they won’t be issuing Pastoral Letters!

Instead Bishop Vincent Long, in his role as Chair of the Bishops Commission for Social Justice, Mission and Service, has issued a Pastoral Message for this occasion. We are calling it a Message rather than a Letter because we are moving beyond the written word alone – there is also a video and social media resources.

In order to help you to prepare in advance to celebrate St Joseph the Worker on 1 May, the full text of the Pastoral Message, a three minute video of Bishop Vincent delivering highlights from the Message, and social media graphics are available here

The Pastoral Message is titled Social Solidarity in a Time of Social Distancing. It reflects on the impact of COVID-19 on our work lives and on the gaps in the assistance provided. Importantly it also encourages us to think about the kind of post COVID-19 society we want.

We are grateful for the assistance of the Parramatta Diocese communications team in making a short video to accompany the message, and for the assistance of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference communications team with social media graphics.

Please tag and copy us into your communications so that we can see how you make use of these resources. It will help us to understand which resources are the most useful to you. If you haven’t already done so, please follow us on Facebook @socialjusticeACBC and Twitter @JusticeCatholic

Best wishes
