Pope’s October prayer intention: For a Missionary “Spring” in the ChurchPope Francis releases a video message accompanying his prayer intention for October, which is that the breath of the Holy Spirit engender a new missionary spring in the Church.
In his prayer intention for the month of October 2019, Pope Francis invites us to pray that “the breath of the Holy Spirit engender a new missionary ‘spring’ in the Church.”
It has become the custom of Pope Francis to release a video message detailing his prayer intention for each month.
The full text of his intention is below:
Today, a new impulse to the Church’s missionary activity is needed to face the challenge of proclaiming Jesus and his death and resurrection.
Reaching the peripheries – the human, cultural, and religious settings still foreign to the Gospel: this is what we call the “missio ad gentes”.
We must also remember that the heart of the Church’s mission is prayer.
In this Extraordinary Missionary Month, let us pray that the Holy Spirit may engender a new missionary “spring” for all those baptized and sent by Christ’s Church,
The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network of the Apostleship of Prayer developed “The Pope Video” initiative to assist in the worldwide dissemination of monthly intentions of the Holy Father in relation to the challenges facing humanity.
Each month, The Pope Video disseminates the Holy Father’s prayer intentions regarding the challenges of humanity and the mission of the Church. Through the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer) https://www.popesprayer.net/If you want to see more videos about the Pope’s intentions, you can find them at https://www.thepopevideo.org/ With the collaboration of Vatican Media: http://www.vaticannews.va/
Pope Francis calls us to renew our missionary dynamism in our country and throughout the world. The theme “Baptized and sent: the Church of Christ on mission in the world” invites us to set out on our way with determination, individually and in community. “The heart of the Church’s mission is prayer.” (Pope Francis, June 2019). The Pontifical Mission Societies / Missio, invite all the faithful, wherever they are, to pray at midday every Friday in October.
Prayer proposed by Pope Francis for the Extraordinary Missionary Month
when your only begotten Son Jesus Christ
rose from the dead,
he commissioned his followers
to “go and make disciples of all nations”
and you remind us that through our Baptism
we are made sharers in the mission of the Church.
Empower us by the gifts of the Holy Spirit
to be courageous and zealous
in bearing witness to the Gospel,
so that the mission entrusted to the Church,
which is still very far from completion,
may find new and efficacious expressions
that bring life and light to the world.
Help us make it possible for all peoples
to experience the saving love
and mercy of Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever.
Father of Goodness, I know you’re with me.
Here I am on this new day.
Place my heart once more
next to the Heart of your Son Jesus,
that is given for me and that comes to me in the Eucharist.
May your Holy Spirit
make me your friend and apostle, available to your mission.
I put in your hands
my joys and hopes,
my works and sufferings,
everything that I am and have,
in communion with my brothers and sisters of this worldwide prayer network.
With Mary I offer you my journey for the mission of the Church
and for the intentions of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network for this month. Amen.
Proposals for the month

- Pray, individually or in community, for the missionaries who announce the Gospel to the people who do not know it, asking for the gift of more missionary vocations.
- Promote a moment of reading and shared reflection of the Apostolic Exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium” within your community, to define some concrete actions of evangelization and missionary dynamism to carry forward.
