What an historic year! For Catholic Earthcare Australia, it has been a landmark year filled with inspiring stories and so many rewarding experiences.
Like his predecessors, Pope Francis, through his Encyclical Laudato Si’, has called us to a new way of being in the world. He has asked all of us to take decisive action to protect Mother Earth, our common home, and we have journeyed with all of you to do just that. We have marched in the streets calling for climate justice, we have gathered almost a million Catholic Climate Petition signatures and now the Catholic Church globally has started to embrace the call to develop an integral ecology. Thank you for standing up and being counted in the name of the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor.
Just last weekend, our world leaders reached a global climate agreement in Paris. For the first time, almost 200 countries have agreed to limit warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius. This agreement sends a clear message: we are phasing out our use of fossil fuels and embracing renewable energy. We are hearing the cry of the earth and the poor in recognising our environmental debt, and beginning to contribute much needed funds to developing countries to help them to leap frog to renewable sources of energy. The Paris Agreement signals the turning of the tide and we hope that Australia’s contribution will enable real transformation.
Whilst it is not a perfect deal, there will need to be a strong focus on strategic and systemic action, transparency and reporting. There is much to be done in 2016 and beyond, both from an advocacy perspective and in converting our personal and institutional way of life on the planet. I hope you will join with us as we carry out this important work.
I would also like to thank each and every one of you who has supported Catholic Earthcare Australia this year. It has been a privilege to meet with so many of you who are passionate about animating Pope Francis’ message in Laudato Si’.
If you would like to help us to continue to bring Laudato Si’ to life across Australia with schools, parishes, clergy, bishops, youth, environmental groups and the ecumenical and interfaith communities, please consider supporting us with a donation this Christmas. Contact Catholic Earthcare Australia at firstname.lastname@example.org or on 02 8907 9500 and give a gift that will help protect our common home.
At this time of peace and good will, I wish you all, along with your families, a joy filled Christmas season and a sustainable New Year in 2016.
Peace and Joy,
