17th October: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
This day has been observed every year since 1993. The UN designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries, particularly in developing countries – a need that has become a developmental priority.
Pope Francis (Evangelii Gaudium # 198):
“…I want a Church which is poor and for the poor. They have much to teach us. Not only do they share in the sensus fidei (sense of faith), but in their difficulties, they know the suffering Christ. We need to let ourselves be evangelised by them…”
