At the Perth launch of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ACBC) Social Justice Statement last September (2014), ‘A Crown for Australia: Striving for the Best in our Sporting Nation’, the transformative capacity of sport to lead us toward justice and peace was discussed. We were also reminded of the statement by Nelson Mandela that sport ‘has the power to unite people in a way that little else does and it can bring a message of hope’.
This Sunday, the 17th of May (2:45 pm), an ecumenical event will be held at St Mary’s Cathedral to thank God for the gift of sport. Speakers will include cricketer, Justin Langer AM; AFL footballer, Nic Naitanui; and NBL basketballer, Shawn Redhage. All are welcome at this event with light refreshments to follow (in the Parish Centre).
