International Labour Rights Forum: Put some good in your Easter basket!

Cocoa farmer with captionWith Easter around the corner, we are getting a lot of questions about what chocolate is best to buy. Chocolate with certified cocoa is increasingly common, and is certainly better for people and planet than non-certified. But we encourage consumers to move beyond the label and buy chocolate from companies that work directly with the farmers who grow their cocoa.

Two companies doing this well are Divine and Equal Exchange (which is offering cute Easter egg-shaped chocolates in time for the holiday if you order by March 20!)

These companies go beyond certification and partner directly with farmer cooperatives to negotiate a fair price, cut out the middle men, and ensure farmers receive a larger portion of the profits. As a result, farmers have more control over their own livelihoods, and they are better able to provide a quality product for you and me to enjoy!

We know collaboration with farmers can make a difference. Our latest report explored the fairness gap that perpetuates poverty among cocoa farmers in western Africa. You can help by making sure the chocolate in your Easter basket is helping get farmers their fair share! And check out other ways in which Divine is working to keep Fairtrade standards high!
