GetUP Petition to Parliament – act before the 4th December 2014

Last week, the UN Committee Against Torture told the Australian government that conditions for asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru amounted to “cruel, inhuman, and unlawful” punishment.

The Refugee Action Coalition, GetUP!, and Children out of Detention (ChilOut) believe this is the right time to broadly distribute a petition sharply focused on closing the offshore detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru. The Australian Catholic Social Justice Council, Doctors for Refugees, Unions for Refugees, and the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils are among others supporting the petition. It is addressed to both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

We are aiming to far exceed 100,000 signatures. More than 95,000 people have already signed the petition. The petition will be submitted to both houses of Parliament on 4 December, 2014.

Your support in maximising the petition numbers would be greatly appreciated.
